On Saturday October 21st, Hispanocare celebrated it’s 29th and last Scholarship Gala “Nuestro
Compromiso.” Over the past 29 years, Hispanocare has awarded nearly $800,000 in scholarships to deserving Latino health-career students who are Illinois residents. In addition, the health screenings and health education community lectures provided by Hispanocare have directly impacted thousands of members of the Latino community, often identifying individuals with previously undiagnosed hypertension, diabetes, and other conditions and referring them to bilingual and bicultural providers who could care for their medical issues.
The impact that the organization has had in Chicago’s Latino population has been amazing and inspiring to all of us who are eager to continue this work and reduce health disparities. We are thankful for all of Hispanocare’s impact, and in particular for the work of Lucy Aquino, the CEO of Hispanocare, who is also a MOLA board member. Also recognized during the Gala was the Michael Reese Foundation, who has had a tremendous impact in the support of Hispanocare’s scholarship program over the years.
Several MOLA board members including president Dr. Pilar Ortega, as well as Oscar Zambrano, Javier Villar, Mervin Dino, Gaby Saldaña, and of course, Lucy Aquino, were present on October 21st to celebrate Hispanocare’s accomplishments, recognize the scholarship recipients, and discuss the next steps for MOLA’s impact in the Latino community.
