2023-2024 MATEC Clinician Scholars Program

The Midwest AIDS Training + Education Center (MATEC) invites you to apply for the regional 2023-2024 MATEC Clinician Scholars Program.

The Clinician Scholars Program is designed for minority and/or predominantly minority serving Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practice Nurses, and Pharmacists who are interested in expanding their capacity to provide HIV/AIDS care. The aim of the Clinician Scholars Program is to increase the number of clinicians that provide care to underserved or disproportionately-affected populations.

Scholars receive 12 months (September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2024) of in-depth training on HIV/AIDS diagnosis, treatment, medical management, and prevention of HIV infection. It is a structured, yet participant-centered program that includes:

  1. A minimum of 12 hours of clinical preceptorship in HIV care.
  2. A minimum of 40 hours of skill building training, including but not limited to: two-day intensive Immersion Institute; distance-based offerings, including meetings and trainings; and clinical consultation.
  3. Participation in the Clinician Scholars Program Collaborative Learning Series, which provides brief didactic presentations on a variety of HIV care topics and allows for case-based discussion with regional HIV experts and peers.
  4. Review and discussion of Scholar cases with their HIV expert Mentor.

Participants can expect to build skills and knowledge through:

  1. Mentorship – Experts in HIV/AIDS care guide Scholars through the program
  2. Clinical Consultation – Opportunities to consult with local and regional experts experienced in diagnosing and managing HIV/AIDS care
  3. Networking Opportunities – Valuable interactions with MATEC faculty, local and regional HIV/AIDS care providers, and other Scholars
  4. Clinical Interaction – Participants will observe the care of patients with HIV infection, participate in simulated patient care scenarios, and respond to case presentations

Applicants accepted into the 2023-2024 MATEC Clinician Scholars Program cohort are required to participate in the following activities:

  1. MATEC Clinician Scholars Program Immersion Institute on September 21 and 22, 2023, in Chicago, IL.
  2. At least five of the eight sessions of the MATEC Clinician Scholars Program Collaborative Learning Series, scheduled for every second Tuesday of the month, from 4:00 PM CT/5:00 PM ET to 5:30 PM CT/6:30 PM ET, between December 2023 and July 2024.
