MOLA & Mobile Migrant Health Team

The Mobile Migrant Health Team (MMHT) is a specialized healthcare initiative aimed at providing medical services and support to vulnerable migrant populations in Chicago, IL. MMHT provides culturally sensitive and language-concordant health assessments to migrants and new arrivals. Historically, health assessments were provided to those temporarily housed at Chicago police stations before shelter spaces became available. Our organization strives to advocate for the health and well-being of migrant communities while educating volunteers on the specific needs of migrants. Under the Figueroa Wu Foundation and in partnership with the City of Chicago (Department of Public Health), MMHT has grown to become the largest network of medical student and physician volunteers providing medical care for this patient population.

The Mobile Migrant Health Team (MMHT) is offering an on-site internship opportunity in the City of Chicago for individuals who are interested in assisting the Board of Directors in the day-to-day management of the organization. This internship involves both hands-on work in the field and remote leadership meetings.

Timeline:
  • 6 months, 10-15 hours a week
Compensation:
  • $400 monthly stipend ($2,400 total for 6 months)
  • The internship may exceed 6 months if funding is secured (either by MOLA, MMHT, or other outside sources).

Here are the key responsibilities and qualifications for prospective interns: Internship Details: Fieldwork on Health Assessment Runs (Schedule TBD).

Interns will be actively involved in health assessment runs. During these runs, the interns will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Assisting the Assistant Director in scheduling follow-up appointments for patients.
  • Ensuring proper documentation of a patient’s History of Present Illness in
  • RedCap, a crucial aspect of maintaining accurate health records
  • Assisting in prescription-related duties.
  • Assisting in prescription-related duties.

Participation in Weekly Remote Leadership Meetings (Mondays, 7 PM – 8 PM CT) Interns will attend weekly remote leadership meetings every Monday evening. These meetings serve as an opportunity for interns to:

  • Reflect on their work in the community.
  • Measure their professional growth and contributions to MMHT.
Skills and Roles to be Learned by Assistant Directors

The internship provides a valuable opportunity for interns to develop skills and understand the roles undertaken by Board of Directors within MMHT:

  • Program Management: Assistant Director interns will gain experience in managing the day-to-day operations of the Mobile Migrant Health Team, including its cadre of healthcare professionals, support staff, and volunteers
  • Communications: Managing communications, including media requests and volunteer inquiries, via email and WhatsApp channels
  • Supply management: Supporting the restocking team to keep accurate inventory of supplies needed for health needs assessment runs, ordering supplies, restocking on as needed basis
  • Research: Supporting summer research interns with recruitment, data collection,data coding and analysis, manuscript preparation
  • Preparing documents: Preparing agenda for meetings, attendance at all MMHT meetings as designated meeting minutes scribe
  • Lead the team: Leadership and Team Supervision Assistant Director interns will lead weekly meetings and oversee the activities of the healthcare professionals, support staff, and volunteers.
Additionally, they will be responsible for:
  • Providing training to incoming volunteers and ensuring that all team members are well-prepared and up to date with their training.
  • Community Engagement: Interns will learn to build and nurture relationships with various stakeholders, including migrant communities, local organizations, government agencies, and other relevant entities. This engagement is vital for coordinating and representing MMHT at community presentations and events.
  • Crisis Management: Interns will play a role in developing and executing crisis response plans during emergencies. Ensuring the continuity of healthcare services in challenging situations is a critical responsibility.
Additional Requirements:
  • HIPAA Training: Interns who have not completed HIPAA training will be provided with a recommended HIPAA training partner. Compliance with HIPAA regulations is essential when dealing with sensitive patient information.
