Welcome to the

Medical Organization for Latino Advancement - Wisconsin

Our Mission

We are a non-profit association of Hispanic/Latinx healthcare professionals. Our goals are to help mitigate the barrier that Latinx individuals face on their journeys to becoming health care professionals and to improve healthcare for the Latinx community in Wisconsin.

What is MOLA?

Medical Organization for Latino Advancement – Wisconsin (MOLA – WI)

The Medical Organization for Latino Advancement – Wisconsin (MOLA – WI), is an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered in the state of Wisconsin. It is made up of Hispanic/Latinx physicians and healthcare professionals that are working to support the career advancement of Latinx individuals in healthcare settings.

The inspiration for the non-profit originated from the growth of the Latinx population and the decline in the number of Latinx physicians and health professionals. Today the Latinx community makes up around 18.7% of the US population but only 3.8% are practicing physicians. Our goals are to help mitigate the many barriers that Latinx individuals face on their journeys to becoming health professionals and to improve healthcare for the Latinx community.

MOLA was founded in Chicago, IL in 2017, and we are now proud to bring MOLA to Wisconsin to expand the work to serve Wisconsin students and the Wisconsin Latinx community. The connections to regional and national organizations are instrumental in achieving the goals of the organization. In the words of Dr. Mora Pinzón, MOLA-Wisconsin’s president-elect “We know that you cannot be what you cannot see, so we hope that, by collaborating with MOLA-Chicago and other organizations, we can increase the number of role models that our community has, make sure that everyone feels that they belong in medicine, and bring new resources to support everyone in their journey!”

To achieve our goals, we are working closely with MOLA Chicago to develop and support new programs, such as mentorship, research summer programs, and scholarships that benefit students in their journeys to becoming health professionals. Programs

Public Health Committee

The Public Health Committee’s goal is to improve public health in our local community by providing public health opportunities in Latinx spaces. We provide our members with volunteering experiences to get involved with public health issues such as educating the Latinx community on issues regarding their health. Our committee also strives to partner with local community organizations to achieve an even broader reach to the Latinx community in Wisconsin. The committee’s purpose is to promote the diversity and inclusion of the Latinx perspective in the public health field. Public health has always lacked a Latinx perspective and as our community grows, so will the need for culturally adapted care in public health.

Research and Educational Opportunities

The Education and Research Opportunities committee focuses on providing educational resources, research panels, informative seminars and get-togethers for Latine undergraduate students who are seeking to participate in these opportunities with the Latinx community in mind.

This committee works to build community, as well as enrich the professional and educational opportunities of current Latine students. The primary population focuses at the moment is undergraduate Latinx students in the Madison area. In the near future, we hope to expand to other Universities in the state of Wisconsin in order to help the greater Hispanic/Latine in higher education aspiring for a career in medicine.

Mentorship Committee

The MOLA-WI Mentorship committee serves to organize, plan, and strategize methods to ensure that our organization is empowering Hispanic/ Latine people interested in the medical field. We hope to create a space that allows students to receive guidance, encouragement, and support throughout their medical career journey. Our desire is to develop programs and events that allow our members to feel that their dreams are achievable while being connected to others who have gone through a similar path successfully. The committee is responsible for all mentorship curriculum and events with the final goal of promoting advancement for the entire Hispanic/Latine community.
